A strong field of UMP Modifieds converged on the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis as part of the Hoosier Hundred.  18 competitors, a vast improvement over previous years, were pitside for the 15-lap event at the huge track.

In qualifying, last year’s winner, Joey Kramer bested the field with a 35.348.  David Shain was second with a 36.100, while Ken Schrader (36.329), Kenny Wallace (37.183), and Curt Rhodes (37.222) rounded out the top five.

When the green dropped for the feature event, it was clear to see that Kramer was again the man to beat.  The Hanover, Indiana driver drove into the lead and never looked back.  One early caution with two laps in bunched up the field, but Kramer proved to be too much, building up a huge lead over some stout competition.

With the checkered in the air, Kramer crossed the line with 11.231 margin of victory, which is remarkable considering the small number of laps run.  It was the second win in-a-row for the Lucas Oil/Poske’s Performance Parts/Fox Shox #77.  Ken Schrader took second, while Kenny Wallace took third in his first ever start at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  David Shain and Curt Rhodes competed the top five.

Charles Baker, Bob Gregory, Rob Starkey, Michael Kettnich, and Rick Weitekamp were the rest of the top ten finishers.

The next big show for the UMP Modifieds with Track Enterprises affiliation will  take place at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana on Sunday, June 7 at the Summit Nationals.  The Mods will be racing for a $1,000 top prize.
